Get Synapse, New Quick launcher for Ubuntu That Uses Zeitgeist
Synapse is a new quick launcher for Linux that can be used to quickly find and launch relevant applications, documents and files by making use of Zeitgeist engine.
The idea is to have a launcher that is similar to Gnome Do, but with more powerful and faster search capabilities that reports relevant results using Zeitgeist engine and plug-ins framework.
Synapse can be launched by using CTRL + SPACE keys. Once it is launched, type anything for your query and results will be reported instantly. Just select what you want and hit enter.
Results are sorted as per relevancy which means that applications that are used more frequently appears first in the list. You can also change the action for particular item by hitting TAB key. A look at various plug-ins it uses to find stuff:
- Applications - searches your desktop files
- Banshee - allows you to play/enqueue music files in Banshee
- Commands - runs any command (ie. "sudo apt-get update")
- Devhelp - search documentation using Devhelp
- Dictionary - find definitions of words
- Directory search - allows opening of commonly used directories
- Gnome session - log out, shut down, restart
- Hybrid search - complete Zeitgeist results by searching for similar files
- Rhytmbox - play/enqueue music files in Rhythmbox
- UPower - suspend & hibernate your computer
- Zeitgeist - search anything logged by Zeitgeist
