[UDS Updates] Evolution For Now, But Thunderbird Will be Default if Proper Desktop Integration Can be Done in Time

In a UDS session today there was quite a debate regarding the default mail client for Ubuntu 11.10. Points  were discussed regarding consistency, desktop integration, speed and performance and user interface.

But no proper decision was taken and the team decided to keep Evolution as default mail client for now. Thunderbird will become the default mail client if following conditions are met in time:
  • Evolution Data Server (e-d-s) integration (there is a half working solution)
  • Calendar integration
  • Contacts (there is a mostly-working solution)
  • Desktop integration, look & feel
  • Consistent user experience between Ubuntu versions
  • Tighter integration with Unity
  • Size of the overall application so it fits in the CD
  • Migration plan for Evolution users
Thunderbird is much faster and I really like the tabbed user interface. So I personally prefer Thunderbird but we will have to wait and hope that everything is done in time. (Session Notes)
