0 A.D. Alpha 6 'Fortuna' Released with New Maps, Sounds, Textures and Many Other Features


Few days back, popular real time strategy game 0 A.D. was updated to sixth alpha bringing in many new features and changes.

About 0 A.D.

0 A.D. is a free, open-source, cross-platform real-time strategy (RTS) game of ancient warfare. It is a historical war and economy game that allows players to relive or rewrite the history of Western civilizations, focusing on the years between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. The project involves state-of-the-art 3D graphics, detailed artwork, sound, and a flexible and powerful custom-built game engine.

The game has been in development by Wildfire Games , a group of volunteer, hobbyist game developers, since 2001. The code and data are available under the GPL license, and the art, sound and documentation are available under CC-BY-SA. 

Codenamed 'Fortuna', this release includes following new features:
  • New unit stances - violent, aggressive, defensive, stand ground and avoid
  • 250 new terrain textures
  • 43 new sound effects. A video below shows these new sound effects
  • New Art - new Greek houses, new Greek siege tower, updated shield patterns for Greek hoplites, art released for Champion units, new Thracian Mercenary unit (screenshot below), new movement animations for giraffes and lions

  • New and updated maps - Cycladic Archipelago III, Southern Greece (screenshot below), Updated Belgian Bog, Mediterranean Coves etc.

To add the PPA and install 0 A.D. in Ubuntu, run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install 0ad

If you want to install bleeding edge development snapshots, then run the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad.dev
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install 0ad
