Xenonauts, New X-Com Inspired Game Coming to Linux

Xenonauts, a new strategy game inspired by X-Com series is coming to Linux. The game is currently on Kickstarter and the game preview has received extremely positive reviews from critics and gamers alike.

Xenonauts is a single-player strategy game. Primarily a strategy game but it straddles several sub-genres.

The player is in control of an organisation tasked with defending the planet against extraterrestrial invasion; establishing bases across the world that house the aircraft, scientists, technicians and soldiers that will be used to protect humanity. The skies must be defended against alien incursion, while ground teams must be sent into combat to capture crashed UFOs or cleanse terror sites to retain the confidence of funding nations and capture new extraterrestrial artifacts and technology to study.

As the game goes on, the player researches the captured artifacts to unlock new units and battlefield technology to use in the fight against the aliens while slowly discovering their origins, eventually learning enough to defeat the alien invasion – assuming that they have not already been overrun.

The game is heavily inspired by the classic X-Com / UFO: Enemy Unknown, released in the mid-90s by the now-defunct Mythos / Microprose.

Xenonauts is currently on Kickstarter and has reached its target of $50,000 with 27 days left. The game was initially supposed to be a Windows only release, but now it will be released for Mac and Linux as well.

They are already talking to a person who will do Linux porting. Their FAQ states:

As explained in Update #5, Xenonauts currently only works in Windows but there has been enough interest in porting the game that it will recieve both a Mac and Linux port for release.

We may be able to give access to the beta / development builds before release for Mac / Linux too, but we're not sure. It'll definitely be ready for release though.

In the meantime, Xenonauts apparently runs fine in WINE!

Xenonuats is expected to be released in October 2012. For $20 you can grab a copy for yourself from Kickstarter.

A demo version, which works fine on Wine can be download from here.
