New Unity Features will Generate Affiliate Revenue for Ubuntu

Olli Ries, Director of Technology at Canonical shared information about some new features in Ubuntu 12.10 that will help in generating affiliate revenue for Ubuntu project.

Music and Video Lenses, will have a “more suggestions” category that is added to search results obtained from the home dash. This will help users to find content available online in addition to what already resides on their device. All these results can be previewed from dash itself through new 'Unity Previews' feature available in Ubuntu 12.10.

A preview section, accessible by right clicking on the result, will allow users to instantly view descriptions, app ratings, music previews, purchasing options etc.

When a user clicks the item and purchases it, it will generate affiliate revenue that can be invested back into the project, very similar to generating revenue from the Firefox search bar.

Another change that will help generate extra revenue for Ubuntu is addition of Amazon and the Ubuntu One Music Store web application icons by default on Unity launcher.

Olli Ries says,

We feel that these icons will provide convenient access to these resources for our users and also benefit the project with the generation of affiliate revenue in those cases that these resources are used. If our users choose to not use these Launcher icons, they can be easily removed by the user by dragging the icon to the trash.

More information on these changes can be found here.
