Install Lenses and Scopes in Ubuntu 12.04 [Wikipedia, Flickr, Grooveshark, Spotify and More]


Most of the Unity Lenses and scopes, that adds extra functionality to dash menu have been updated to work with Ubuntu 12.04. Some lenses like Wikipedia lens are new releases.

A Lens adds an extra new category to Unity dash allowing you to find specific results from local sources, web and even do calculations. A Scope adds a new source to an existing lens. For example, you can add Flickr scope as an extra source in Photo Lens.

In simple words, you need a Lens to look into specific data sources called scopes.

To install these Lenses and Scopes, you will need two PPAs, both of them can be added to Ubuntu by running commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:markjtully/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scopes-packagers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

Lets look at them one by one. You can install them from Ubuntu Software Center after adding Above PPAs.

Lenses

Ask Ubuntu: A Unity lens to ask questions and get answers on AskUbuntu.com, right from your Desktop.

Reddit: It puts Reddit, in your Unity.

Binary Clock: A Binary Clock, in your Lenses.

Calender: Display calendar events in a lens.

Web History: This lens allows the user to search the websites they have visited on their computer. Log out and log in again to activate it.

Quickly: A quickly template for building simple Unity lenses (for developers)

Community: Unity lens for displaying teams, events, meetings and news from the Ubuntu Community.

Dictionary: Search gnome-dictionary.

Cooking: Unity lens for searching for recipes in the Dash

Graphic Design: A lens that displays results from Graphic Design search engines.

Photo: A lens hosting search engines dedicated to photos (Shotwell, Flickr, etc.)

SSH Search: This lens allows the user to search for hostnames in ~/.ssh/config and ~/.ssh/known_hosts.

Torrents: A Unity lens displaying results from various torrents providers in the Dash.

Utilities: A lens to access utilities in the Dash Home : calculator, weather and local time for cities around the world, etc.

Wikipedia: A plugin to search Wikipedia in the Dash.

Stock Ticker: Unity lens for displaying stock quotes for United States stock markets

Clementine: Scope for Unity's Music lens for Clementine music player

GMusicBrowser: Scope for Unity's Music lens for GMusicBrowser

Guayadeque: Scope for Unity's Music lens for Guayadeque music player

Calculator: This scope adds a calculator to the Utilities lens

Cities: This scope adds a local time and weather engine to the Utilities lens

DeviantArt: A Deviantart search engine for the Graphic Design lens

Flickr: A scope for the Photo lens, to search Flickr, with authentication

Grooveshark: This scope adds a Grooveshark search engine to the Music lens

Pirate Bay: This scope adds a The Pirate Bay search engine to the Torrents lens

Shotwell: A scope for the Photo lens, to search Shotwell and EXIF data

Spotify: This scope adds Spotify search results to the Music lens

Adult Lens (NSFW)

You can install Adult lens and Youporn scope for Unity by running commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:scopes-packagers/adult-scopes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-lens-adult unity-scope-youporn

By using this PPA, you affirm that you are over the age of majority in the jurisdiction you reside and in the jurisdiction from which you access this PPA. If you are under the age of majority in the jurisdiction you reside and in the jurisdiction from which you access this PPA, then you are not permitted to use this PPA.
