Ubuntu 11.10 will Provide Post Release Updates for ATI and Nvidia Proprietory Drivers

In a discussion today at UDS, it has been decided that post release updates for proprietary graphic drivers for ATI and Nvidia will be available for users to install.

How will this work?
  • Stock Drivers will be always available in Jockey.
  • If a new stable (not beta) version of driver is released, a new option will be added in Jockey that will allow users to upgrade driver. It will not be a mandatory update.
  • Updates will be provided for proprietary drivers only
  • Driver updates will be provided for first six months only
This is great news as now we are not bound to have same stock drivers that Ubuntu recommends and we will be able to update our drivers timely.
