[Gaming] FlightGear 2.4 Released with Exciting New Features

Open Source and Cross Platform flight simulator game FlightGear has reached version 2.4 after being in development for 6 months bringing in many impressive new features and fixes.

The changelog is massive so I will highlight main changes here:

• Completely overhauled weather module: The current FlightGear 2.4.0 version takes weather generation further by applying the laws of physics to the reported conditions and by determining how the atmosphere interacts with the terrain.
• FlightGear 2.4.0 introduces numerous graphical enhancements: Now capable of rendering highly realistic mountain surfaces, 3-dimensional cityscapes, or shiny metallic surfaces. Water moves realistically and sunlight is reflected from its surface. Many new aircraft models are so realistic and detailed it is almost possible to see oneself reflected in their hull.
• Improved auto-pilot system
• Additional cockpit systems such as TCAS, and EICAS systems 
• A brand new experimental HLA interface layer that allows for real time communication between several independently operating modules
• FlightGear 2.4.0 has a built-in option to keep its scenery up to date and download new scenery areas on the fly

You will need to compile the package yourself as only source code is available now. None of the FlightGear PPAs has been updated with Ubuntu packages yet but we will keep you posted as soon as they are.

Update: FlightGear 2.4 is now available in official Ubuntu 11.10  repositories.
