First Person 3D Adventure Game 'Dear Esther' Coming to Linux?? [Based on Source Engine]

Story driven, atmospheric 3D first person exploration and adventure game Dear Esther can come to Linux. Made by Indie Studio thechineseroom, Dear Esther game has received both critical acclaim and commercial success.

About Dear Esther

Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional game-play the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience.

Dear Esther won IGF 2012 Excellence in Visual Art Award, numerous praises from game reviewers and got a metacritic score of 78/100.

The game was originally built as a Half-Life 2 mod in 2008. However it was completely remade from 2009 to 2011 and was released as an independent standalone game based on Valve's Source engine on February 14 this year.

Check out the trailer:

Dear Esther devs are planning to port the game to Linux this year. In a Q & A session on Steam, they have shown interest in this.

Q. Given the good reception Dear Esther seem to be having, have you considered other platforms? I would surely like to recommend your experience to friends who don't have good enough PCs and since the Source engine run well almost anywhere, a PSN or XBLA release could do some good.

A. Mac is on it's way. We hope to also go to Linux this year. And I want to see a console port, but that's a long and tough process. We want to do ports, but we have lots of negotiations to have with platform holders before we can confirm anything.

Nixie Pixel also interviewed Dear Esther devs at GDC 2012, San Francisco and they have said that a Linux port is under consideration.

Dan Pinchbeck from Dear Esther team also replied to my tweet:

Dear Esther is based on Valve's Source engine and it would be interesting to see how they port the game to Linux as no Source engine games are yet available on Linux.

Running with Scissors' Postal III is also based on Source engine and Wikipedia article on it mentions Linux compatibility (release date TBA).

If any one of these games comes to Linux sooner or later, it would be a great news for Linux community as a successful port of Source game could lead to release of more such games.

Fact: Frictional Games and thechineseroom are now working together on next game title in Amnesia survival horror game series. Named 'Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs', the game will be released later this year on Linux, Windows and Mac. Our coverage on this here.
