Linux Game Devs Upload Their Own Game on Pirate Bay, Strangely It Increases Sales

Remember few days back we wrote about a new Linux game, No Time to Explain (NTTE). The game developers have uploaded their own game on Pirate Bay and strangely enough it has increased game sales. Read on.

To counter the piracy problem, Tiny Build Games who released NTTE few days back, uploaded their own version of game on Pirate Bay. But there is a difference in this version and the original game that you can buy from the game website.

All in game characters wear Pirate hats and entire game is Pirate themed basically making it No Time to Explain 'Pirate Edition'.

Torrent Freak found it quite strange and asked game developer Alex about this pirated version and he confirmed that indeed they have uploaded this as the game will be anyway downloaded illegally, then why not have a free pirate themed version.

“We thought it’d be funny to leak a pirate version ourselves which is literally all about pirates and pirate hats,” Alex told TorrentFreak. “I mean, some people are going to torrent it either way, we might as well make something funny out of it.”

This gimmick has actually worked for the devs as the gamers have highly appreciated it and actually bought the game rather than downloading pirated copies.

“We saw very positive WTF REALLY feedback from users, and saw reactions that people bought it simply because they liked the joke. So we don’t see it hurting sales in any way,” Alex said.

Though I find it amusing, it makes me think that who are bigger victim of piracy, Indie studios or big game development companies?

P.S. Pirate Bay version is Windows only.
