A Look at New Features Coming in Ubuntu 12.10 [UDS Summary]
Many new features and plans for Ubuntu 12.10 were discussed at Ubuntu Developer Summit. Though no concrete news on a new icon theme.
Planned Ubuntu 12.10 Features
- Improvements to sound theme
- Many improvements to Jockey backend. Installing and updating drivers will be made easier. Jockey may also be integrated into Ubuntu Software Center and support for installing open source drivers, virtualbox drivers, new printers and dial up drivers will be added.
- A Gnome Shell Flavor of Ubuntu 12.10 will be released providing out of box Gnome 3 experience
- Development on Unity 2D will stop on desktop and Ubuntu TV. Systems not having a GPU or proper hardware acceleration will also be able to run Unity 3D using Gallium3D llvmpipe. So Unity 2D is most likely making its last appearance in Ubuntu 12.04
- Lots will work will be done on Ubuntu TV including porting Unity 2D based UI to Unity 3D
- Wayland may be finally implemented in Ubuntu 12.10. This will work for open source graphic drivers only and provide a fully flicker free boot experience
- LightDM Greeter will be used as lock screen
- Work on coverflow effect in dash and Unity dialog
- Gnome Control Center (System Settings) will be forked into Ubuntu Control Center
- Overlay Scrollbars can be implemented for Firefox and Thunderbird
- LibreOffice menubar can be installed by default
- Improvements to boot speed
- Improvements to application startup time
- Compiz will be ported to OpenGL ES 2.0
